INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO SEARCH THE ONLINE CATALOG
You can access the RCRL Online Catalog using any computer, tablet or smartphone with an Internet connection.
You can access the RCRL Online Catalog from several locations:
- Click on Search the Online Catalog in the menu list found below the website header
- Click on RCRL Online Catalog found at the bottom of the The Reference Library page
- Click on the Click here to search the online catalog link found on the Frequently Asked Questions page
Any of these links will open a new window Search Essex County Small Business Development Resource Center and Reference Library
BASIC SEARCH
- Enter search term(s). For instance, business planning, Press ENTER
- The search will return results for all titles listed in the catalog containing the term business or planning anywhere in the catalog, not necessarily in the same record.
- You may review the list of titles and print or save the page for later reference.
- You may use this list to contact the Resource Center to reserve a title for your next visit.
BASIC SEARCH REFINED
You have the choice when entering search term(s) to refine your search using the provided DROP-DOWN list.
The DROP-DOWN list contains three (3) options. These options could return different results for the same search term. See the examples below.
- Find Any Word – this is the default used and will return results with the term(s) found anywhere in the catalog, not necessarily in the same record.
EXAMPLE – search the term business planning will return results of 142 records containing any record with the word business or planning anywhere in the record
Result examples include:
12 Factors Of Business Success, The: Discover, Develop, And Leverage Your Strengths
AMA Handbook of Business Writing, The: The Ultimate Guide To Style, Grammar, Usage, Punctuation, Construction, And Formatting
Family business guide, The: everything you need to know to manage your business from legal planning to business strategies
- Find All Words – this option requires all the search term(s) be present in the same catalog record.
EXAMPLE - search the term business planning with the Find All Words option, will return 4 records where the term business and planning are found in the same catalog record.

Family business guide, The: everything you need to know to manage your business from legal planning to business strategies
- Match Phrase – this option will return results where the exact phrase entered is found in the catalog record.
EXAMPLE – search the term business planning with the Match Phrase option, will return 3 records where the term business planning is found as a phrase and not separate words.

BASIC SEARCH – DEFINED
Any search entered in Basic Search can be further defined by restricting the search to any of seven (7) fields:
- Title search
- Author search
- Category search – RCRL uses the following SEVEN (7) categories to classify books in the library. These are also used on the shelves to arrange the library collection.
- COMPUTERS
- GLOBAL
- LEGAL
- FINANCE
- MANAGEMENT
- MARKETING
- SPECIAL INTEREST
- Subject search
- Dewey search
- ISBN search – enter the ISBN without hyphens
- Publisher search
ADVANCED SEARCH
You can select the Advanced Search screen by clicking on the Advanced Search Screen link found in the right-hand corner of the Search page.
Using Advance Search you can refine and define your searches very discretely.
You can search each of the seven (7) Search fields identified in Basic Search using the DROP DOWN refinements for any and all fields.
Specifically, you can search any field and select “Find Any Word”, “Find All Words”, and/or “Match Words” for any combination of searches.
For example, you can enter the following search:
“Plan” in the Title field
“Management” in the Category field
“Finance” in the Subject field
The search yields one (1) record – Title of “How to Write a Business Plan”, located in the Category “Management” with the Subjects “New business enterprises — Finance” and “Small business — Finance”
